On Saturday, October 29th, Step'D Up Saturdays will provide your bass music needs as per usual with our Halloween special! Feel free to come party at the Temple in your most outrageous costume with Edmontons best bass music DJs serving up the freshest in Dubstep, DnB, Glitch Hop, Breaks, and everything bass!

Also, on the Saturday, All Blown Up will be bringing in TORRO TORRO to the Edmonton Events Center for the 5th Annual Halloween Howler! Featuring Oh Snap! DJ's Degree, Spenny B, and MNG!

And finally we have DJ's as DJ's and Bands as Bands at the Starlite room Monday, October 31st with our Ibiza-Themed Foam Party! 7 DJ's and 16 Bands playing as other Famous DJs/Bands! "I was flying over the Rockies back to Vancouver after a great show. At the time, I was collaborating on 3 tunes with 3 different producers. Each song was on my mind. With only 2 days to go before the legendary Krafty Kuts and Dynamite MC hit the starlite room, I felt it would be appropriate to enlighten those of you who have yet to discover the talent that is Dynamite MC. Here's the lowdown...

"Dynamite MC, (born & Dominic Smith, 7 October) grew up around the world , Germany, Ireland, Brazil , Gloucester , Bristol and now London. He originally gained prominence in jungle/drum and bass, working with Roni Size and Reprazent, but has also released hip hop and breaks and garage material.

He started his MCing career on pirate radio station, Crush FM, broadcasting in Gloucester South West England during the early 1990s. He met Roni Size in 1994 and began MCing for the Full Cycle crew. When the Bristol collective formed the live band Reprazent, Dynamite shared vocal duties with singer, Onallee. Their debut album New Forms won the Mercury Music Prize in 1997. Dynamite's role was enhanced for Reprazent's second album, the hip-hop influenced In The Mode (2000).

Following this, Dynamite has collaborated with a range of artists including The Nextmen, DJ Skitz, Scratch Perverts, Andy C and DJ Zinc, Krafty Kuts releasing a solo album The World of Dynamite (2004). In 2006 a mixtape CD, "Big Man Talk" was released on the Strong Records label (featuring samples from Enya and Kanye West).

The track, "Bounce", is featured on the soundtrack of Madden NFL '07.

"Bounce" and "After Party" also feature in the video game, Need for Speed: Carbon.

I will be venturing off to Shambhala for the very first time this year, and needless to say I am EXTREMELY excited. The lineups for all but the beach stage and living room stage have been announced. I figured I would share them with you all, incase any of you are attending and have yet to see, or perhaps to inspire you to purchase a ticket!

In the Fractal Forest I am most looking forward to A.Skillz and Kingdom

The Pagoda looks promising thanks to Mat the Alien, aka the multi genre turntable assassin, as well as Dj Audit, an artist I recently discovered via his moombahton track I.R Burial

In the Rock Pit you will find me dancing to the euphoric melodies of Bonobo, as well as jammin' to Foreign Beggars and Longwalkshortdock, who I had the pleasure of seeing in Victoria earlier this year.

The Village is sure to be pretty unreal. Being a lover of glitch hop, I am obviously stoked for Mim0sa, Samples, as well as Knight Riderz. As if that weren't enough...Dj Nu-mark of Jurassic 5, Dj Fresh, Flux Pavillion, Emotionz, and Zion I will be keeping my ears oh so happy. I'm really looking forward to Dub Fx, a unique artist who builds his own tracks through the power of his voice alone.

I'm not really familiar with most of the artists playing in the Labyrinth, but I will definitely be checking out David Starfire.

Top Billin for Japan!

If you're looking to contribute to a worthy cause, or you just enjoy great music, the homies at Top Billin have put together this mix, the proceeds of which go to aid those suffering in Japan. Here's the scoop:

“A while a go we had an opportunity to design a compilation exclusively for the Japanese market, that was supposed to come out in April this year. The idea was to make a compilation that would reflect us in 2011, including bits from our back catalogue as well as some unreleased exclusive gems. Our friend Nakura from Tokyo was doing his job as the project manager for this and his friend and our buddy, a DJ and producer named Eccy (awesome music btw) was also taking part in this project.

But as we all know Japan was hit with the most horrific disaster in their history, tearing down almost the whole country, leaving thousands dead and even more injured, homeless or without even food.

We sat in studio, watching the devastation on TV and wondered what could we do, we have friends there. On that very moment it was clear that we should use this compilation that was designed for Japan, to help Japan.

So now we’re giving it for you in exchange of small (or bigger, your choice) donation that will go directly to Red Cross Japan. We won’t take a penny, 100% goes directly to help the people in need in Japan. Why the Red Cross? Because with them you know money will go to those really in need. If Japan has enough money, then they will help people in Libya, so your money is never lost.

We read somewhere some bitter man’s comment that he won’t donate to Japan as their GDP (gross domestic product) is 33.100$ per person, that Japan does not need money. That’s bullshit, the devastation is so big, it will take Japan years to recover.

So join us, buy this compilation for as low as 1€ if you’re really broke, or if you got a paying job, maybe pay a bit more. You get dope tunes in exchange. We respect you for your willingness to help. Thank you, arigatou gozaimasu, kiitos.”

Canadian Dubstep duo Zeds Dead recently appeared on Much Music for an interview as well as a set. While checking up on the Shambhala 2011 facebook group, I noticed that a discussion had been posted regarding their appearance. I was blown away at how many people were criticising the duo, saying that they were "selling out", and all kinds of rants about how dubstep should remain underground. While I, like anyone, liked when electronic music was underground... it's time to face the facts. The scene is blowing up, and who are we to criticise artists for taking up great opportunites to showcase their music!? I saw several comments stating that Much Music is mainstream garbage... which made me wonder why people weren't HAPPY to see Zeds Dead featured and glad to see less mainstream artists getting the attention that they deserve. To be honest it just seems like a bunch of hipsters who are cranky because something they enjoy has become popular and now they can't admit to liking it anymore.

The same goes for Rusko. I can't count how many times I've heard people complaining that he "sold out" by producing music for Britney Spears. Are you kidding me? Chase and Status have produced for Rihanna, Diplo and Afrojack have produced for Chris Brown, are they all sellouts too? It's not like Rusko collaborated with Britney on one of his own tracks. He simply helped her produce a better one, which if anything people should be happy about! With all this whining about how mainstream music sucks... you would think people would appreciate their favorite producers lending a helping hand to aid a suffering genre.

In the words of Dylan from Zeds Dead: "It was an honor to be on much music. Regardless of what their playing these days I was just happy for the opportunity. And for the hardcore haters: we went on national tv and played exactly what we wanted. There wasn't a song cut from our playlist. Eat a dick.."

MOOMBAHTON

Okay, so... I am slightly obsessed with Moombahton. I think the first Moombahton edit I ever heard was the Nadastrom Lydia remix, and although I loved the track I never took the time to search much deeper into the up and coming genre until I heard Toddla T's Radio 1 mix, which featured a special 1 hour Moombahton segment. I am happy to report that after embarking upon further investigation throughout these past couple of months... I have become completely immersed in the genre. I find that the mid tempo speed appeals to a much wider demographic than traditional house music, and that it is a lot easier to groove to in both a club environment and while listening at home.

MIM0SA - 58 DEGREES EP

Mim0sa is one of my favourite producers, but I must admit I had no idea that he had a new EP coming out. Imagine my surprise when I logged on to twitter this morning only to see a tweet from Mim0sa announcing that a new, FREE EP has been released! The EP - titled 58 Degrees - features 5 original tracks, all of which seemed to differ a little from his usual style. I was surprised when I played 'Block Party', which starts off as a drum and bass track and works it's way into a heavier dubstep feel about halfway through. It's always nice to see an artist move out of their comfort zone, but I have come to appreciate the melodic, crunk(for lack of a better word) feel that most Mim0sa tunes have to them, and to be honest some of the tracks on the EP (Stairway, for example) are a little more aggressive and head bangerish than I typically like to listen to.

But HEY, what do I know?!

This is the first in a monthly post Im going to make called "CLASSICK" its like a class, thats sick, but not sick like ill... but ill like dope, get it???

Each week in "CLASSICK" Im going to bring you some classic knowledge on some of my favorite genres. We start with my heart, Reggae music, there is nothing like it to make you feel happy on even the worst of days!

CLASSICK VOL.1 - Reggae

Reggae is a music genre first developed in Jamaica in the late 1960s. While sometimes used in a broader sense to refer to most types of Jamaican music, the term reggae more properly denotes a particular music style that originated following on the development of ska and rocksteady.

Reggae is based on a rhythmic style characterized by accents on the off-beat, known as the skank. Reggae is normally slower than both ska and rocksteady.Reggae usually accents the second and fourth beat in each bar, with the rhythm guitar also either emphasizing the third beat or holding the chord on the second beat until the fourth is played. It is mainly this "third beat", its speed and the use of complex bass lines that differentiated reggae from rocksteady, although later styles incorporated these innovations separately.

Unlimited Gravity AKA Ronnie Weberg is an up and coming glitch hop producer from Denver, Colorado. I discovered him a few months ago and have been particularly impressed by him as of late. He first caught my interest with his 7 track compilation 'All Day Every Day'. When it comes to Unlimited Gravity you can expect crisp, clean production quality, rich melodic texture, a bassline that bangs and his characteristic synths that make the tracks instantly memorable. Plus all his tunes are at least 5 minutes long which is DOPE because I never want them to end..

ANYWHO, enough talking, get to listening. Here's his latest compilation:

Krispy has been a DJ in and around the area of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada for approximately 5 years now. It started at a “learn to become a hip hop DJ class” in the beginning. However, the true interest was always in electronic music. It was then that Krispy met DJ Floorlayer and was taught how to truly refine his style as an electronic DJ.

Taking influence from a variety of artists such as Hatiras, Stupid Fresh, AC Slater, JELO, Excision, Zodiac Cartel, Electric Soulside, Noisia, Nero…. The list goes on to really create a diverse style with many different types of influences and genres.

Beginning as a vinyl hard house DJ, the style gradually evolved to CDJ’s and electro house over the years. And, more recently, the style has been dubstep/drum and bass.

Krispy has played at various clubs within the city of Edmonton over the years as well as Motion Notion Music Festival in Drayton Valley, Alberta this year. Also, more notably, he has had 2 guest appearances on the dubFWD radio (88.9FM) show in Baltimore this year.

His latest accomplishment was having the electro house style tune, “Swamp Step”, signed to the Transendance label. This marks the first successful year of being a producer. More productions are in the works leaning towards the electro and dubstep genres.

Expect many more releases and upcoming shows to come in the future from this exciting and diverse electronic artist.

DJ MAG TOP 100 - REPULSIVE!

In another absolute atrocity of a top 100, Armin Van Buuren once again takes home the crown. DJ Mag again over looks a plethora of talented, innovative, progressive, and genre evolving visionaries. They opt instead to continue a downward trend of glorifying music for the lowest common denominator and simply ignore actual performance skills. Not only that but the only two non house/trance DJ's are Andy C and John B. Ive seen both of those artist many times and while Andy C holds it down with the best in the world John B is much more skilled in the realms of production and not the most amazing selector out there. This list makes no sense to me and I feel as though this is a testament to the current pitifull state of a large part of electronic music. I honestly can not think of enough negative things to say or words that properly express what a loss this is for electronic music as a whole.

Shamik is a long time friend of mine and to say the least an absolutely amazing artist and friend. He is definitely one of the most passionate people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing and that passion comes through constantly in his craft. His drive for hard work is seldom equaled by his peers and I know this first hand. I was introduced to this phenomenal producer by his collaborations with Fred V; Liquid DnB seems to be a sure fire item around the Oh Snap boys these days and Fred V seems to have been pivotal in anchoring the sound in our hearts.

Expect big things towards the end of this year from the collaborations of Fred V and Grafix. They are proof that Liquid is packing serious heat beyond Camo, Krooked and Netsky.

This track packaged with "One of these Days" is shaping up to be my most anticipated release of the fall. Watch out!

This Ms Dynamite is blowin' up my speakers big time right now! Ms Dynamite (originally known as Lady Dynamite) has been in and out of the spotlight since 2002. She was first known for her vocals on the UK garage track "Booo!". She's also released "A Little Deeper" in 2002 and "Judgement Days" in 2005. In 2006 her explosive temper had her arrested for punching a male police officer in the face whilst in custody. She then quickly disappeared from the public eye. A few years later she decided dabble in UK reality television but one's got to admit it that her musical career is probably far better than appearing on "Hell's Kitchen", although I'm sure she could make a mean risotto.

Personally I've been a fan of Digital Soundboy from the second it was formed and have been listening to their sporadic podcasts for years. For the first time since the whole Taylor Swift ish Mr. West steps back on stage. He dropped into nothing short of a massive thunderous reaction on Jiggas "Run This Town". Which really goes to show the man can do no wrong. I endorse Kayne in a big big way and while the whole Taylor Swift thing was a bit much I applaud Kayne to the fullest because he always says exactly whats on his mind. How in todays age of mass produced plastic people crankin' out "hits" they didnt even write and sometimes didnt even sing can you not fully respect that.
